The Karlsruhe Research Centre (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, FZK) is one of Europe's largest centers for research into natural and applied science. Its research and development programme comprises five research areas: Material Structure, Earth and Environment, Health, Energy and Key Technologies.

Karlsruhe University (TH) and the FZK have established the  Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) to pool the strengths of the two partners.
