Johann Wüest's 1772 painting of the Rhone glacier, on view at the Kunsthaus in Zürich, served as the visual starting point for the introduction of SELFRAG's Centro Uno waste-to-value project. The painting shows a glacier that today has to be covered in blankets to slow its melting — a contrast that frames why the project exists.

Project Overview

Construction of Centro Uno commenced in early January 2022 in Full-Reuenthal, with completion anticipated by year's end. Starting January 2023, the facility will process approximately 35,000 tons of slag annually from incinerators in Buchs, Turgi, and Renergia, recovering at least 50% of valuable materials.

Environmental Impact

The project delivers:

  • Substantial conservation of scarce landfill capacity
  • Recovery of approximately 750 kg of CO₂ per ton of slag treated
  • A certification process underway for 450 kg per ton, with CO₂ certificates expected from 2023 onwards

As stated in the article, this represents "our humble contribution to our planet."
